'For a moment it was like, what could James Franco play that doesn't feel like 'Where's Waldo?' ' Bill Condon jokes.

Picture in your mind James Franco sparkling in the sunlight with red vampire eyes, because director Bill Condon told MTV that the actor almost (sort of) was cast in "Breaking Dawn."
The "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" star has long been lamenting the fact that he could not be a part of the "Twilight" film series, of which he has admitted to being a big fan. During an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in December, Franco even admitted that he petitioned for a role in the "Breaking Dawn" movies but was turned down.
So when MTV News had a chance to catch up with Condon at San Diego Comic-Con while he was promoting "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," we couldn't resist asking the director if there was any truth to the rumor Franco has been spreading.
The short answer: There is.
"He told a friend of mine who then sent a message along to me," Condon explained. "For a moment it was like, what could James Franco play that doesn't feel like 'Where's Waldo?' I really thought about it for a second, and nothing made sense."
The only roles open to Franco would have been as one of the new vampires in the covens who come to support the Cullens against the Volturi, and Condon felt that between Franco's star power and his busy schedule, it would not have been a good fit.
"I think he thinks this somehow involves some big rejection of the idea. It wasn't that," Condon explained. "If it had made sense, and frankly if I had called and said 'do you want to play that vampire from that country,' it would have involved hanging around for two months in a scene with 80 people, and I don't know if he really would have wanted to do it."

Unnamed family sources tell English tabloid The Sun that singer quit drinking cold turkey.

There have been many conflicting reports of what caused Amy Winehouse's death on Saturday. While initial autopsy results were inconclusive and the outcome of further toxicology tests will not be available for several more weeks, a report out of England is raising new questions about what might have killed the troubled singer.
Winehouse, who famously struggled with drugs and alcohol during her rocket ride to fame in 2006-2007, was drug-free for the past three years, according to statements from her father, Mitch Winehouse. But the 27-year-old star appeared to still be struggling with alcohol, and unnamed family sources told English tabloid The Sun that it might have been Amy's cold-turkey approach to quitting drinking that did her in.
The sources said Winehouse's decision to give up drinking entirely for three weeks might have given a lethal "shock" to her system. "Abstinence gave her body such a fright they thought it was eventually the cause of her death," the source said.
Click for photos of Amy Winehouse's life and career.
"[Amy's father, Mitch] said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid bingeing at all costs. Amy told him she couldn't do that. It was all or nothing, and she gave up completely ... Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take."
The family has reportedly speculated that Winehouse died as a result of a seizure because her small frame could not withstand such a dramatic withdrawal. People magazine reported that it had confirmed the family's speculation about the cause of death.
On Sunday, the singer's U.K. representative, Chris Goodman, told TMZ that Winehouse was found alone in her bed by a bodyguard who had been hired to keep an eye on her. "She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep, and when he went to wake her he found she wasn't breathing," Goodman said. "He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed."
MTV News asked Dr. Sam Zakhari, director of the Division of Metabolism and Health Effects at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, if it's possible for someone to have this kind of reaction to stopping alcohol intake. Dr. Zakhari, who did not treat Winehouse and has no firsthand knowledge of her case, spoke in general terms about the scenario described by the unnamed source.
"People who drink heavily or who are alcoholics and stop all of a sudden may have withdrawal symptoms that range from agitation to intense anxiety to tremors, seizures, convulsions and delusions," said Dr. Zakhari. "In rare cases, it can affect the heart and cause cardiac standstill (heart stoppage), but that's in very rare cases."
Dr. Zakhari said it's difficult to say with any certainty if quitting cold turkey could cause a collapse, because there are many factors that play into that scenario. "You have to look at their nutritional status, family history of heart problems, whether they are using other medications that can interact with alcohol, whether they abuse other substances," he said. "The accurate answer is that we don't know if something like this is due to stopping drinking alcohol because the result depends on such a multitude of factors."
Dr. Dan Hall-Slavin, a psychiatrist and a consultant in addiction at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, agreed that it's possible, but not common for someone who quits drinking to have such drastic health effects. "There is a phenomenon called 'kindling,' where withdrawals from alcohol can get worse and worse over time," said Dr. Hall-Slavin, who also had no firsthand knowledge of the Winehouse case and was speaking in general terms.
"From a clinical standpoint, you never tell anyone who has been actively drinking to just stop until they get into a monitored setting because alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and while some can stop and not experience problems, others with a previous history of alcohol withdrawal can experience very serious symptoms like seizures and a severe withdrawal called Delirium Tremens, where your temperature goes up, you become dehydrated, and you can die in that state."
Sometimes, people who suffer a seizure in private can aspirate the contents of their stomach and die, but different factors can also play in, such as other health issues that result from daily drinking at high volumes and the short and longer-term consequences to the cardiovascular system from use of stimulants such as cocaine.
"The other factor is that alcohol is more toxic for women at lower doses over a shorter period of time than for men," Hall-Slavin noted. "It's partly how alcohol is distributed and metabolized in the body."

Tom Felton, James Franco and other castmembers say come for the apes, stay for the story ... or just the apes.

HOLLYWOOD — There is enough intrigue, presumed destruction and primate shenanigans in the trailers for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" to entice more than just the fans of the 1968 original into theaters when the film opens next week. But when MTV News caught up with the principal castmembers at the Hollywood premiere on Thursday, we asked them to sell us on a few more of the film's must-see elements, aside from their furry co-stars. Basically, if people come to see the apes, what will make them stay?
"Wow, James [Franco], Freida [Pinto], Andy [Serkis], everyone else," Tom Felton said, speaking to his co-stars' appeal. "There is a mixture of CGI and special effects that we've never seen onscreen before, along with a strong story and a strong message: Humans can't play God too much. We should not overstep our boundaries when it comes to manipulating Mother Nature."
Pinto countered that it's all about the apes. "I think this is one of few films that really give them a voice as well," she said. "Of course, 'Planet of the Apes' did as well, but 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' gives them a voice in a very revolutionary way."
One of the prominent primate voices heard is that of Caesar, played by seasoned motion-capture performer Andy Serkis, who, according to Franco, is the main reason why the film is any good.
"The apes, I think Andy Serkis and WETA should get top billing," Franco said. "They stole the show; they're incredible."
Actor John Lithgow, who plays the father of Franco's character, was the only one who thought folks will start out loving the apes and leave loving the humans.
"They [will] stay for the people, and the extent to which the apes become people," he said. "It's a story, it's a great story, that's why they stay."

"Twilight" fans gearing up for the franchise's last two films already have the cast and crew's word that the much-discussed wedding and birth scenes will be everything they've imagined since reading Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn." But what about porting the book's passionate sex scene from page to screen?
When MTV News caught up with director Bill Condon at Comic-Con, he was happy to report that shooting in Brazil was a breeze. "It was kind of fun!" he told us. Apparently Stewart and Pattinson's electric onscreen chemistry was enough to diffuse any and all off-screen awkwardness among cast and crew.
"They are so comfortable with each other," Condon said. "They made the whole thing ... it was kind of fun. Those things are always a little strange. They get to be weirdly technical at certain points."
Stewart and Pattinson's realistic closeness comes as no surprise, given that rumors about their real-life relationship have been circulating since the initial "Twilight" film hit theaters in 2008.
"They managed to put all that aside and turn it into something. That's a very real moment," he noted.
For his part, Pattinson told fans at Comic-Con that there were some not-so-romantic moments during the shoot in Brazil.
"Brazil was amazing," Pattinson said. "It was really amazing the day we got there, and really beautiful and warm and everything you'd expect. Then it suddenly, for the remainder of the shoot, was not only raining but like hurricane storms. ... It was kind of like having a honeymoon in England. We were playing board games instead of, like, making love on the beach."

Olivia Wilde in "Cowboys and Aliens"
Photo: Universal Pictures
Olivia Wilde is no stranger to big-budget productions — she did, after all, star in last year's "Tron: Legacy." But the actress is adamant about the fact that her latest blockbuster, this Friday's much-anticipated "Cowboys & Aliens," is not like any other that has come before this summer.
"We are not a sequel, and we are not a superhero movie," Wilde explained to MTV News, undoubtedly referring to the string of well-known franchise movies that have come our way thus far this summer, from sequels to "Harry Potter" and "Transformers" to comic book fare like "Thor" and "Captain America." "So we're an original piece of material and that's really rare this summer."
OK, it's no superhero movie, but "Cowboys" is based on a comic book. Still, Wilde emphasized that the plot isn't exactly derivative. "Even though our title is based on a comic book, we're not actually a comic book movie. The story is completely original," Wilde noted. "Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who wrote 'Star Trek,' wrote this story from scratch, just using the idea of the 'Cowboys & Aliens' comic book as inspiration."
Another way that "Cowboys & Aliens" stands out from the pack is the way it pays homage to a classic genre. "I think we're bringing the Western to a younger audience in a major way, which I think is really exciting, because I love Westerns, and I'm happy to introduce this genre to a bunch of people," Wilde said.
Of course, no good Western is complete without its rugged leading men. "We have Daniel Craig, who I think embodied Steve McQueen in this role," the actress gushed. "He's so badass it's unbelievable, and I think he's really, really smart and interesting in this role, and I think Harrison Ford pulls out his best performance in years. He's incredibly moving, and also very funny."

Don't believe everything you read -- or hear. That's what Glee creator Ryan Murphy is saying after the rumor mill began spinning when he announced earlier this month that fan favorites Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer would be leaving the hit Fox series.
Now, Murphy is putting the rumors to rest that the actors had been fired from Glee, which returns for its third season on Sept. 21. "Some people were writing they're not on the show so that means they must be fired," he told Deadline.com. "Well, no. That was 100% incorrect."
Murphy now reveals that the reason the actors would not be coming back at the end of season 4 was that he had been investigating the possibility of a spinoff that has now been tabled. Legally, he could not talk about the spinoff to the press until it was official, and neither could the actors, which left a vacuum of information.
But news that the actors had been fired spread when
Emmy nomineeColfer had said on July 14 that he
found out the news that he'd be leaving the show via Twitter. "I didn't necessarily know that it was going to be our last season next year, (but) I knew something like that was coming up eventually," he told
Access Hollywood. "I mean, we can't be there forever."
Murphy insists the show's stars had been looped in for months about what was going on. "For any of those actors to say, ‘I found out that I was fired off the show from Twitter,’ is absolutely 100% not true," he told Deadline.com. "And all of them knew they weren’t fired, but it was an awful thing to read. And I felt for them. And they couldn’t come out and say, 'No, we weren’t fired. We’re talking about a spin-off.' Because we told them not to."
With no Glee spinoff in the works at the moment, Murphy says he'll be much more cautious in what he chooses to say to the press in the future. "I've learned a lesson from this experience," he explains. "I've learned to really, really monitor what I say. Before I didn't do that. My bad. Stupid."

'I've always been fascinated by what really goes on in the subways,' Neil Patrick Harris tells MTV News of what he'd do first.

"The Smurfs (In 3-D)"
Photo: Sony Pictures
"The Smurfs" are three apples high, as the legend goes, and in this week's big-screen adaptation of the beloved children's cartoon, Hollywood takes a stab at re-telling the tale for a new generation of kids.
The 3-D tale (with some CGI) is voiced by an A-list cast, including VMA-nominated Katy Perry, George Lopez and Alan Cumming, to name a few. In the movie, the Smurfs land in the Big Apple, where they end up staying with expecting newlyweds played by Neil Patrick Harris and "Glee" star Jayma Mays. Of course, they're also trying to stay as far as possible from their nemesis, Gargamel, played by Hank Azaria.
The little creatures find themselves in some silly situations as they try to navigate the big city. When MTV News caught up with Harris, Mays and Azaria in New York, we asked what they would do if they suddenly found themselves having to survive the city in Smurf-sized bodies.'
"I've always been fascinated by what really goes on in the subways," Harris said.
His onscreen lady love, Mays, agreed, "That's a good one," before warning him, "but then the rats would be bigger than you. So that'd be a little scary."
"Maybe I'd sneak into really fun buildings," Mays added. "I would get into clubs that won't let me in now."
Harris later quipped of a popular Broadway show, "You could sneak into the 'Book of Mormon.' That's a hard ticket to get right now."
The actor who plays the movie's bumbling bad guy had a less glitzy answer. "If I were three apples high and I lived in New York, I would sneak into the Mets game. That's what I'd do," Azaria said. "And I'm blue, so they'd probably just mistake me for some kind of mascot. I'd wear orange to go with it. You see Gutsy's beard there? It's orange; that's Mets colors right there. I'm sure Gutsy is a Mets fan."

Pop star joins new campaign to encourage fans to download PhoneGuard app that locks smartphone when car is in motion.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber likely spends way more time on private jets and international flights than behind the wheel of a car. But the teen pop sensation knows one thing about driving: You shouldn't text when you're behind the wheel. That's why Bieber, 17, has signed on to a campaign urging his fans to lay off the smartphone while they drive.
"We need to change the attitudes in our society toward texting and driving and I am making it one of my personal goals to make this happen," said Bieber in a statement released as part of his endorsement of PhoneGuard's Drive Safe software, which disables the texting, email and keyboard functions of mobile phones while a car is in motion. "Every night we perform, we have a banner that goes up that says 'Don't Text and Drive' so it really means a lot to me," he said.
Bieber has been pushing his fans to give up texting while driving since earlier this year when he made a surprise appearance on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" to promote the efforts of Wellman, Texas' Brown family, who have been raising awareness about the dangers of the practice since their daughter, Alex, was killed in a texting-while-driving incident. Bieber's anti-texting campaign will provide some funds to the Remember Alex Brown Foundation charity.
The singer joins a number of other major figures who've been working to get the word out about the dangerous practice, including the Jonas Brothers, who have been outspoken advocates with Allstate's "X the Text" campaign. Others who've signed on for that effort include former "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks and "Camp Rock" star Meaghan Martin. "Glee" actress Jane Lynch has also filmed public service announcements, as her TV alter ego Sue Sylvester, on behalf of LG Mobile Phones to highlight the dangers of texting while driving.
Among the biggest names to endorse the end of the practice is Oprah Winfrey, who has been asking her followers to take the No Phone Zone Pledge since 2009, in which more than 423,000 people to date have vowed not to text while behind the wheel.

We see a whole lot of Brooklyn Decker's skin and an alien ship, but blink and you'll miss Rihanna.
By Eric Ditzian
"Battleship" may be based on a board game, but the action flick's first trailer shows an influence far more cinematic than anything having to do with little plastic pegs and the faux-sinking of tiny seafaring vessels. The new footage, which Yahoo! premiered on Wednesday (July 27), begins like an ode to a "Blue Crush"-ish beach make-out movie, veers into "Armageddon"-esque father-vs.-daughter's-boyfriend antagonism, then explodes in an orgy of a couple dozen alien-invasion movie references.
Totally original, this one ain't. But it's also pretty damn entertaining, and we really are looking forward to checking out the madness when it hits theaters on May 18, 2012. Until then, here are our picks for the five key "Battleship" trailer moments.
Brooklyn, Obviously
One of these days, Brooklyn Decker is going to get a movie role that doesn't require her to parade around a beach in a bikini. Or not. One thing is certain after checking out this footage and taking in her performance, such as it was, in Adam Sandler's "Just Go With It": Decker, the Sports Illustrated model, has been typecast. In "Battleship," she finds herself in the middle of one of cinema's oldest relationship pickles: in love with a bad boy whom her dad can't freaking stand. Clearly the relationship between the boy (a naval officer played by Taylor Kitsch) and the daddy (Liam Neeson's no-nonsense admiral) will factor into the battle with these aliens. Let's just hope it doesn't become the emotional focus.
Don't Tread on Me
Everything in the Navy's military exercises in the big blue ocean seems to be going well until they encounter a hulking contraption submerged in the water. One unlucky dude (Kitsch) is sent out to touch base, literally, with the alien ship, unleashing a whole lot of extraterrestrial terror. The aliens, we'll soon learn, are here to utilize our oceans as a power source. This one shot raises a bunch of questions. Why are the ship's defenses activated by simple touch, rather than the proximity of the Navy? What kind of tech do the aliens possess that they can send a sort of shockwave that hurtles a man so far, so quickly? And what's inside the ship that we don't yet see?
What a Big Bubble You Have!
Speaking of alien weaponry, the ship is capable of unleashing some kind of bubble force field that encompasses an enemy and, so it seems, destroys everything within it. We'll just ignore, for now, how the bubble reminds us of that containment unit in "The Simpsons Movie." Instead, let's concentrate on the alien tech. We're hoping for originality and cool visuals to join forces and deliver us a satisfying early summer movie experience. The bubble, perhaps, is the harbinger of fun, absurd, eye-popping stuff to come.
She Needs an Umbrella
"Battleship" marks Rihanna's big-screen debut. In the trailer, blink and you miss her. But she's there, standing up in a raft and looking wet as the alien craft flies overhead. She certainly looks freaked out. But we can't yet get a sense of her acting chops from this footage; and hey, we might not be able to even after this popcorn flick's credits roll. All we can say for now is she had a blast on the production. "Working with [director] Peter Berg is unbelievable," she told us last fall. "I love doing movies now. It's something I want to do more of. I just want to pick films that are wise for me and roles that I can pull off, nothing that is too big for me."
Taking Flight
We have to say we're surprised how much of the alien ship we get to see in this first trailer. We see how it's a craft that can both plunge into the water and also take flight. We see how it can transform and shift and hover; quite a lot of control, those aliens have on this sucker. We see its cylinder-shaped weaponry. We see the front of the ship almost seems to have a face. So the question is: How much did filmmakers hold back? We haven't, for instance, seen the aliens themselves. With so many alien flicks hitting theaters each year, it's getting harder and harder to surprise audiences with those creatures. Can "Battleship" do it? Stay tuned.

Barrymore jumps behind the camera for Best Coast's new 'Our Deal' clip.
By James Montgomery
Chloe Moretz in the "Our Deal" supervideo
Ever since they released their debut disc, Crazy for You, last summer, Cali fuzz-poppers Best Coast have become your favorite "cool" celebrity's favorite "cool" band, championed by celebs from Miranda Cosgrove to Jimmy Fallon (and just about everyone in between).
So, it should come as no surprise that the Coast's new supervideo for Crazy for You track "Our Deal" is quite the celebrified thing, featuring cameos from the likes of Donald Glover, Alia Shawkat, Chloë Moretz and Tyler Posey ... and as an added bonus, it's directed by the long-reigning Queen of Hollywood Cool: Drew Barrymore.
And while the full "Our Deal" video won't premiere until Tuesday, we're proud to present you with a 30-second sneak peek of the clip right now. And judging from what we've seen so far, much like Best Coast's music, the vid pulls heavily from '50s-style teen dramas — everything from "Rebel Without a Cause" to "Grease" — with Moretz (the breakout star of "Kick-Ass") and Posey (he's the dude from MTV's "Teen Wolf") portraying starstruck lovers who just happen to be members of rival gangs, the "Day Trotters" and the "Night Creepers."
Will Moretz and Posey's love prove stronger than their colors? How many switchblade fights will we see? And how awesome will the inevitable "drag race through the L.A. riverbed" scene be? You'll just have to wait and see, when Best Coast's "Our Deal" video premieres in full Tuesday on MTV.

She?s always up for a good time, and last night (July 28) Ashley Greene was spotted at the Ella Moss Party in Los Angeles.
The ?Breaking Dawn? babe looked lovely as she exited Everleigh restaurant with a gal pal and hopped into a limousine to avoid the paparazzi.
Earlier in the day Ashley made sure to stay in shape during the off season- she got her workout on at a local Los Angeles fitness center.
Following her grueling cardio/weight routine, Ms. Greene sipped a bottle of water and headed over to the Naked Baby boutique for some shopping.

Selena Gomez played a show on Sunday night at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, California. And mid-concert, her fans got a big surprise as Gomez's beau, Justin Bieber, took the stage.
Video posted on Celebuzz.com shows Bieber giving his lady love a big hug before launching into an acoustic version of Justin Timberlake's classic breakup ode, "Cry Me a River." He also reportedly sang "Favorite Girl."
Bieber even took to Twitter to tell Gomez that he thought she did a great job onstage. "Had a #greatnight and surprised the people. felt good to be on stage. nothing is changing that. #REAL," he wrote. "@selenagomez u did great tonight. proud of u."
Bieber, who recently revealed that he was taking a bit of a summer break, also added that as nice as it was to be onstage again, he is even more enthusiastic about the new album he's working on. "More excited than ever to get back in the studio and make this #newalbum," he wrote. "Miss the tour and want to give u all new music. #BELIEVE I do this because i love music. #REAL."
Earlier in the weekend, and offered a big "thank you" to her fans on Twitter. "HappyBirthdaySelena is a trending topic," she wrote. "Thank you all so much for a great birthday. Thank you to everyone who sent birthday wishes, I love you all."

Now that every soldier with an iPhone has decided to invite a celebrity to the Marine Corps Ball, we can't expect them all to say yes -- but Scarlett Johansson has shown how to say "no" with class. Johansson was asked to the event by Sgt. Dustin L. Williams, who was no doubt inspired by the successful efforts of his fellow Marines to bring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake. Watch Williams' YouTube video below!
"Recently I noticed in the media that a lot of Marines have been asking celebrities to the ball," says Sgt. Williams, as he gets dressed while "Eye of the Tiger" plays in the background. "So I was thinking, if I could ever ask anybody to the ball, who would it be? I mean, obviously they need to be beautiful, classy... who would it be?"
The video then cuts to a photo of Johansson in an evening gown, as the song "When A Man Loves a Woman" begins to play. Cute!
Though the 26-year-old actress declined his invitation, she was obviously charmed by the video -- and sent him a token of her affection, in the form of fancy champagne!
"I feel incredibly honored to have been invited to the Marine Corps Ball by Sgt. Dustin L. Williams," Johansson declared in a statement. "Not only does Sgt. Williams deserve recognition for his bravery, selflessness and dedication to the United States and its people, but he also displays a cheeky talent for filmmaking."
She then addressed her would-be date directly. "Sgt. Williams unfortunately, due to prior commitments, I will not be able to attend the ball with you this year, but I am sending you a case of Moët and Chandon with gratitude," writes the actress. "In my absence, I raise a glass to you and all the men and women of the U.S. Marine Corps, past and present, in thanks for your continued commitment to preserving the safety of our nation."
Okay, so Sgt. Williams doesn't get to make an entrance with his movie-star crush -- but a personal message and a case of champagne is a pretty sweet consolation gift!
Kunis was the first celebrity to take the YouTube bait, and the actress says she has cleared her schedule to attend the Marine Corps Ball in Greenville, N.C. Her Friends with Benefits costar Timberlake, who pressured Kunis into saying "yes," has also tentatively accepted an invitation from a female Marine in Virginia to attend the ball in Washington, D.C.
But Johansson isn't the first celeb to decline, either. Betty White, who was asked to the ball by Sgt. Ray Lewis, sweetly sent her regrets earlier this month. However, in a twist of fate, another celebrity has offered to take her place: Terminator star Linda Hamilton! Watch her very funny reverse-invitation to Sgt. Lewis below. As of right now, he hasn't responded -- but who would turn down a date with the woman who helped Arnold Schwarzenegger save the world?

Now that NFL lockout has ended, EA 'able to flip the switch on roster updates pretty easily,' rep says.

What would the world be like without football? Thankfully, fans needn't concern themselves with such a horrible scenario (at least for another 10 years), as NFL owners and the NFL Players Association came to an agreement to end a months-long standoff that might have canceled the 2011-2012 season. Because the lockout ended early enough, there will be no impact on the season itself, but what about this year's installment of "Madden"?
"Madden NFL 12" is scheduled to be released in about a month, but video games are often finalized months before they hit store shelves. Does that mean anyone who buys "Madden" will be playing with out-of-date rosters from before the lockout was even settled?
Anthony Stevenson, the director of marketing for "Madden NFL 12," discussed how the development team is planning to keep everything up-to-date for fans. "From the game's standpoint, what everyone wants to know is rosters," he said. "You're taking what historically would be five months of offseason activity and you're condensing it into what would be as little as two to three weeks. So, there are going to be a lot of roster moves. And these aren't inconsequential moves: There's Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb; these are moves that could shape a division. But we're fortunate that we're able to flip the switch on roster updates pretty easily."
Mike Young, the game's creative director, confirmed that the rosters would be up-to-date not only at the beginning of the season, but also straight on through to the Super Bowl. "Our ratings people and our roster guys are going to be really, really busy," he said. "Day one, anybody with an online connection is going to have all these moves and up-to-date rosters. All season long, we'll support that really well."
Young confirmed that while the rosters and player stats will be up-to-date, EA won't be able to implement all of the just-agreed-upon rules. "Some of the new rules we will not get in the game this year. Unfortunately, [the end of the lockout] happened too late," he explained. "It's kind of a complicated system to change with something like a patch."
As for which new rules didn't make the cut, Young revealed, "The rookie cap stuff, a lot of the business part of football. So your Franchise mode will be using last year's rules for another year. That was the only disappointment. But, as far as rosters, I think we're the best at having those up-to-date."
Those roster updates will require an Internet connection for your console. If you don't have your console hooked up to the Internet, Young suggested taking advantage of nearby gamers. "Take it over to your friend's house, plug it in," he recommended. "There are a lot of free trials for Xbox Live and PSN [PlayStation Network] is free. Update your game, save it to your hard drive, and bring it home. You need the rosters!"
Certainly, fans who are just thrilled to have an NFL season will consider updated rosters the cherry on top.

Edgar Wright says he's just completed a third draft of the script for the Marvel movie.

With "Captain America: The First Avenger" grossing over $65 million on its opening weekend and fans already buzzing about next year's "Avengers," Marvel's quickly expanding cinematic universe is as popular as ever. Now, from San Diego Comic-Con 2011 comes news that Marvel Studios might finally be moving ahead on a long-awaited release: Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man."
The "Shaun of the Dead" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" director has been talking about taking on Marvel's smallest superhero since at least 2007, promising a live-action film that would blend humor with action and would include two different Ant-Men: Henry Pym and Scott Lang.
In the Marvel Comics source material, both characters make use of a special formula and suit that allows them to shrink, as well as a high-tech helmet that facilitates communication with ants and other insects. "Ant-Man" is said to feature flashbacks of the original hero, Pym, as well as scenes of his successor, Lang, in the present day. Now, after years of infrequent updates and stalled production, things are finally looking up for "Ant-Man."
"Since February, we've done two drafts of the script, and we just handed in a third draft on Monday," Wright told MTV News. The director is co-writing the film with Joe Cornish, whose "Attack the Block" (a British alien-invasion movie starring frequent Wright collaborator Nick Frost and in theaters on July 29) was making waves of its own at Comic-Con. Apparently, some of the hold-up on "Ant-Man" was related to "Attack the Block," as the duo did not complete a second draft until Cornish was finished with his directorial debut.
"The way we wrote the script is for it to be a standalone genre film," Wright said, perhaps indicating that "Ant-Man" would be less explicitly tied to the "Avengers" family of titles like "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Thor" and "Iron Man." Wright continued by explaining his desire to "create an 'in' for people so you don't have to know 50 years of 'Avengers' history to enjoy the movie."
While most recent superhero adaptations have focused on Marvel and DC's "big guns," characters like Batman, Spider-Man, Superman and others, the protagonist of "Ant-Man" will be entirely new to all but the most fervent comic book fans. For Wright and Cornish, however, the freedom that comes with a lesser-known character is a large part of the upcoming project's appeal.
Wright was close-lipped on who he wanted to play the part of the movie's eponymous hero (or heroes), but he did hint that he had someone in mind.
Who would you like to see play Ant-Man? Let us know in the comments below.
