When Ryan Gosling packed on 60 pounds for his role in The Lovely Bones, his female admirers weren't the only ones disappointed in the change to his body.
It turns out the film's director, Peter Jackson, had a different idea of how the character should look than Gosling did. The Oscar-nominated actor talked to The Hollywood Reporter about how he got canned from the movie, which was filmed in 2007 (the role was eventually filled by Mark Wahlberg) -- and what he did to gain all that weight.
"We had a different idea of how the character should look," Gosling said. "I really believed he should be 210 pounds."
The 30-year-old star revealed he put on the extra weight by drinking melted Haagen Dazs ice cream whenever he was thirsty. But it turns out his beefing up was all for nothing. "We didn't talk very much during the pre-production process, which was the problem," he said. "It was a huge movie, and there's so many things to deal with, and he couldn't deal with the actors individually. I just showed up on set, and I had gotten it wrong."
Gosling soon found himself in a most undesirable position. "Then I was fat and unemployed," he said.
But, some other people involved with the film claim otherwise. Fran Walsh, Jackson's wife and collaborator shared her side of the story with The Hollywood Reporter in 2009. "Ryan came to us two or three times and said, 'I'm not the right person for this role," she said. "I'm too young. And we said, 'No, no, no. We can age you up. We can thin your hair.' We were very keen."
Walsh also insisted that Gosling's weight had nothing to do with it. "It wasn't until we were in pre-production and we had the cast there that it became increasingly clear: He was so uncomfortable moving forward, and we began to feel he was not right," she said. "It was our blindness, the desire to make it work no matter what."
The Lovely Bones eventually opened in December 2009 and earned a somewhat paltry $43 million at the U.S. box office. While the film received mostly negative reviews, Stanley Tucci walked away with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the movie.
Meanwhile, Gosling has gone from "fat and unemployed" to svelte and starring in the upcoming indie Blue Valentine.
