'Adam was always into doing the craziest stuff,' director Ric Menello tells MTV News of the late Beastie Boy.

Adam Yauch leaves behind an impressive catalog of music and videos with his Beastie Boys brothers Ad-Rock and Mike D, but "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" and "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" are, without a doubt, two of their most iconic releases. Ric Menello helmed the videos for both songs, with some help from co-director Adam Dubin, and looking back now, Menello tells MTV News, jokingly, "If I knew that people were going to be looking at them 26 years later, I would've done better!"
While attending graduate school for film at NYU back in the '80s, Menello befriended a young Adam Yauch, Ad-Rock and Mike D, who kept him company at his part-time job as a desk clerk, talking about movies and music into the wee hours of the morning. "I wrote the movie 'Tougher Than Leather,' which the Beastie Boys appeared in, then Rick Rubin suggested I would be a good director for 'Fight for Your Right' because I had new ideas and it was better to fail at a new idea than to succeed with a crappy old idea," Menello explained. And although he was hesitant to take on the job, for fear of "ruining their careers," he eventually enlisted the help of Adam Dubin to co-direct, adding that he "needed someone to blame if it stunk."
Once he accepted the job, they collectively brainstormed ideas and set to work. "We originally had an idea we couldn't use, which was them disrupting a high-society, classy party at a gallery — because at that point, we didn't know too many people who were classy or high-society," he explained. "I came up with the plot, Rick Rubin and Adam added to it, and then Rick, Adam and I directed it. The Beastie Boys definitely had creative input, and I recall Adam being the ringleader. They were friendly, cooperative, enthusiastic and creative guys, especially Adam."
Menello admits that he never could've predicted how legendary the clip would become. "It was kind of a dumb video, but it was done in a very sophisticated way visually. I often say the style of the video is 'stupidity done in an intelligent way,' " he said. "The concept was infantile rebellion, and they were good actors for that. It wouldn't have worked if not for Yauch, Rock and Mike D being pretty good actors and being funny. The whole point was for it to be comical as well as musical.
"Adam Yauch, at that point, was the ringleader — he had a very dry sense of humor, a little different than everyone else's. He was also enthusiastic to do anything, which came in handy on that video and when we did 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn,' " Menello continued. "If something had to be done that was the least bit risky, he volunteered immediately. There was a television set that we had to smash with a sledgehammer and it was very important that it didn't look like a fake TV, so we made a hole in the video tube, which meant that there might have been an explosion — but he didn't care! He was like, 'I'm gonna smash the TV!' All throughout the video, he was like, 'I gotta do it, it's gonna be great, we have to have that shot!' And he stepped right up to do it. He was always into doing the craziest stuff, but he was a keen guy, very smart and quick to learn, so it didn't surprise me that a few years later, he started directing his own music videos."
The fun didn't stop with 'Fight for Your Right,' though, as the boys teamed up with Menello once again for "No Sleep Till Brooklyn." "My favorite moments in the 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn' video were when Yauch was called upon to be Bugs Bunny and he got the face just right for that. He also had to figure out how to open the safe they were robbing during the concert, and he figured out the best way to open up the safe was to slam his head on top of it. So he smacked his head on top of the safe and it opened, and I thought that was hysterically funny. Usually when people try to open a safe they use tools, but he said, an exact quote, 'My generation smashes its head onto it. That's what my generation does to open a safe.'
"Even when they were worried if something might not work, they always gave their all. We really helped make it work," Menello added, as a final thought. "It didn't surprise me when later, besides comedy and satire, their music became more complicated, and they got into social issues."

Robert Pattinson is on a roll, Twilighters. It was just announced that the beloved actor has joined director David Michod's "The Rover," also starring Guy Pearce.
While there is little known about the project, Deadline Hollywood reports the film takes place in the near future and follows a man (Pearce) who ruthlessly hunts a group of thieves through the rough Australian outback after they steal his car. Pattinson will play a thief named Reynolds. According to Variety, Michod will pen the script based on an original idea from "Animal Kingdom" star Joel Edgerton and himself. David Linde and Liz Watts are set to produce under Lava Bear Films and Porchlight Films.
The news immediately follows the announcement that Pattinson signed on for "Mission: Blacklist," the movie adaptation of Eric Maddox's book "Mission: Blacklist #1: The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein — As Told by the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture." The actor will star as the man who led the hunt.
Both "Rover" and "Mission" are still in development, but Pattinson has a busy year ahead of him. He travels to the Cannes Film Festival to promote David Cronenberg's mind-tripping "Cosmopolis" and closes out "The Twilight Saga" as Edward Cullen one last time in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2." Also available on VOD beginning Friday is the titillating drama "Bel Ami," which opens in Los Angeles, New York and select cities June 8.

Demi Moore is no longer Mrs. Kutcher in her personal or social media life. Seven months after announcing her decision to divorce ex Ashton Kutcher, Moore, 49, has finally changed her Twitter handle from "@mrskutcher" to something declaring her independence.
"So hard finding a name that was fun, somewhat playful and available. So for now it will be @justdemi," she wrote her fans. "It could grow on me!"
The Five director added: "Thanks everyone for your help in finding my new name!"
Moore first asked her Twitter followers for their input last month: "Time for a change, Twitter name change. Any suggestions?" she asked. "Collecting all the suggestions! Thank you. Keep them coming!"
It was a surprise change of heart from Moore's earlier position: "Changing my Twitter name isn't a top priority right now," she said in late 2011. "Sorry it bothers so many of you. Should I not tweet until I do? Does it really matter?"
The actress took a break from Twitter starting last January, when Moore entered rehab at a private center in Sundance, Utah.
She returned to Twitter in April after her three-month hiatus from the social media site when she posted a photo of herself captioned, "Testing."
Let's hope she'll be putting the new name to good use!

MTV News looks at the best Beastie clips of all time, including ones directed by MCA (or Nathanial Hornblower) himself.
By Gil Kaufman
Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch
Photo: Ron Galella/ Getty Images
There are bands that make great music and others that make great videos. But there is a rare breed of act that makes both. Since their very earliest days, the Beastie Boys were in that latter category.
From the frat-boy fun of 1986's "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" video to what will likely be their final clip, a 2011 all-star clip to promote the Hot Sauce Committee Part Two single "Make Some Noise" and the "Fight for Your Right Revisited" film, the B-Boys not only had fun, they made sure we did too.
With the passing of Adam Yauch (a.k.a. MCA) on Friday (May 4) at age 47 following a three-year battle with cancer, MTV News takes a look back at some of the trio's most beloved clips, as well as the ones directed by Yauch under his Swedish pseudonym, Nathaniel Hornblower.
"(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)"
This is the one that launched MCA, Ad-Rock and Mike D to global stardom. The party anthem was accompanied by a very literal video in which, well, the fellas throw a crazy party and trash the joint.
"No Sleep Till Brooklyn"
Young, wild and free, the Boys lampoon heavy-metal knuckleheads after a cheesy club promoter turns them away when they show up with their "instruments" (i.e. scratch-ready records). Wearing metal wigs and Poison-worthy spandex, they soon strip down to their streetwise uniforms and start raising some hell and engaging in the kinds of shenanigans they became infamous for when they hit the road with Madonna on their first major tour. It's silly and amateurish, but then again, so were they at that time.
"Hey Ladies"
In one of the first of many clips in which the trio would slip into a number of alternate personas, this video from Paul's Boutique had it all: sushi chefs, eight-track tapes, disco dancing, human clocks, cowbells, pimp suits, a mariachi band, fake mustaches and goatees, scuba diving, Afro wigs, "Saturday Night Fever" homages, a "Free James Brown" subliminal message, a 1970s Vincent Van Gogh and the original appearance of booty pads.
"So What Cha Want"
They weren't all high-concept. Yauch was behind the lens for this 1992 mind-tripper, which simply tracked the three MCs as they flexed and rapped their way through a forest tricked out with negative-image special effects intercut with ominous nature footage.
"Sabotage"
The ne plus ultra of Beastie videos, this '70s cop-show spoof directed by pal Spike Jonze is one of the funniest and most creative clips in music-video history. Action-packed and simultaneously utterly ridiculous, the mini-movie finds the Boys cruising the streets of San Francisco in a late model sedan while chasing the bad buys in an increasingly ridiculous series of wigs, mustaches and costumes. Yauch appears as the dapper Sir Stewart Wallace, as well as Nathan Wind playing Cochese.
Filmed by Hornblower, this classic spoof of Japanese monster movies from 1998's Hello Nasty is again awash in absurd costumes as Yauch makes popping, locking killer robots look expensively cheap. Between shots of the haz-mat-suit-wearing MCs posing and rapping in Tokyo subway stations and streets into a fish-eye lens, we see their scientific alter egos trying to save their giant robot from getting short-circuited by a sea creature.
"Body Movin' "
Yauch/Hornblower went highbrow with the video for this Hello Nasty single, which was inspired by the beloved cult 1968 Italian cat-burglar caper "Danger Diabolik." Once again, Yauch dressed himself and his partners-in-crime in absurd outfits and had them act out everything from laughable sword fights (complete with a bloody Yauch beheading) to catapult escapes, helicopter vs. car chase scenes and midair parachute wrestling matches.
"Ch-Check It Out"
Not as well known, this kinetic Hornblower clip from 2004 is another mix of aggressive into-the-camera rapping, with bits of everything from "Star Trek" homages and swamp airboat chases to the Boys in old-lady drag throwing fish across the avenue at their male counterparts.

'She didn't even call me!' Bieber laughs to MTV News about onetime crush Kim Kardashian.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway
Justin Bieber recently hit the studio with Kanye West to get some Yeezy magic for his Believe album. While fans will have to wait until June 19 to hear what the pals cooked up in the studio, Bieber did tease what it's like to record with the MC.
"Just being in the studio with him, he's just so creative and everything he says, he means it, and he's just really smart," Bieber told MTV News on Thursday during the "MTV First" premiere of his "Boyfriend" video. "So I think it's always great to get into the studio with those people.
"Basically, he was just talking about going out of the box and doing things that are different," he continued. "And he's like, 'I want to just make you cool.' He wants to just basically do records that people wouldn't necessarily think I would do."
He added that West was incredibly kind to him while they worked together, never criticizing him, but instead giving him lots of props. "He never gave me advice on my rapping, but every rap record that I played him, he's like, 'Yo, that's your best one!' He's never said, 'I don't like that.' He's always been super supportive."
Recently 'Ye started dating reality starlet Kim Kardashian, who just so happens to be a former crush of Mr. Bieber's. So are there any hard feelings between the two pals over their shared romantic interests?
Bieber laughed that Kanye was "just taking my women," adding that Kardashian didn't even give JB the head's-up that she was seeing 'Ye. "She didn't even call me! It was crazy," Bieber joked.
Kanye addressed his feelings for Kim on the song "Way Too Cold" and Bieber is taking a page from the Yeezy book. He tackled his own tabloid drama on Believe, including last year's headline-making paternity scandal.
"I'm just talking about what's relevant in my life and different stories that have come out," he explained. "I've talked about that on my album: different situations that I've been in and things that I'm feeling. That's what I wanted to talk about. The whole the baby situation, where they said I had her baby — totally not true by the way — [I] wrote a song about that, so that's on there. It's like my 'Billie Jean.'
"At the end of the day, I'm human," he added. "I want to talk about that. That's kind of what my whole motive is with this album."

'It all stemmed from substance abuse,' Combs says in response to G. Dep's second-degree murder charge.

Not long after Diddy turned heads at Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group press conference on Wednesday, he appeared on Funkmaster Flex's Hot 97 radio show and addressed the recent tribulations of two of his former Bad Boy artists: G. Dep and Mase.
According to Diddy, G. Dep, who was recently convicted of second-degree murder on a 1993 shooting charge stemming from a botched robbery in Harlem, became a different person when severe substance-abuse issues took hold of his life.
"None of that was in G. Dep's nature. When there were certain things that he was going through with the substance-abuse situation, he would be a different person. But on an everyday [basis], he was probably one of the nicest, most quiet, shyest, most humble cats that was out there," he told Flex. "I was like, OK, maybe he was under the influence when he confessed. And then out of nowhere, they said he was convicted, which was such a shame, because he's such a great talent. And it all stemmed from substance abuse."
Diddy also recently got a surprise when recording for the remix to Wale's "Slight Work." He was paired with his former right-hand man Mase, a platinum-selling rapper who was rumored to be a new signee of Ross' Maybach Music Group earlier this week.
"Me and Mase are cool. We've kept in touch over the years. I love Mase," he told Flex of the MC who once retired to become a preacher. "If it wasn't for Mase, I wouldn't be where I was at today. Me and him were like Batman and Robin. So it felt good to get back on a record with him, and it's one of the hottest, most intense records in the club. That's what I specialize in. And then talking that talk."
Last week Mase addressed a rumor that he might be signing with Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group. "[Rico Love] just called and asked me to take a ride with him — I didn't know who was gonna be in the studio," Mase explained. "I got there and everybody was there, and they just said, 'Take a flick.' The next thing I know I got a Maybach chain, I got 20 beats from Kanye. The stories just keep getting crazier."

Anna Paquin is married to True Blood costar Stephen Moyer and expecting her first baby this fall, but she hasn't stopped identifying as bisexual. In an interview with Zooey magazine, Paquin, 29, says that her attraction to both genders is still a part of who she is.
"I'm sure for some people saying they're bisexual feels less scary than making a statement that they're gay," acknowledges Paquin, who declared her sexuality in a 2010 PSA.
"For me, it's not really an issue because I'm someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing," she continues. "It's not made up. It's not a lack of decision. It's not being greedy or numerous other ignorant things I've heard at this point. For a bisexual, it's not about gender. That's not the deciding factor for who they're attracted to."
Bisexuality is always a hot topic in Hollywood, and the True Blood actress isn't the only star to experience backlash for embracing the label. Cynthia Nixon, who is in a long-term relationship with a woman following her marriage to a man, came under fire earlier this year for describing her sexuality as a "choice." And while plenty of stars have declared their attraction to men and women, it's often seen as a publicity stunt or a way to make themselves seem edgy.
"I guess I could lie about it to seem more exciting," Mariah Carey scoffed when asked if she was bisexual in 2010.
For Paquin, bisexuality is just a way to see the world ("a really minor biographical detail"), and being married to a man doesn't change a thing. But even after dealing with criticism and skepticism, she doesn't regret coming out for the cause of ending anti-gay bullying.
"If you're going to talk about some cause in a way that's meaningful, says Paquin, "you should identify why it means something to you."

Top 5 took on British tunes and songs of the '60s on Wednesday night's 'Idol.'

Another night, another double-dip on "American Idol," as the top five tackled both British tunes and songs from the 1960s. (Does Nigel Lythgoe just randomly pick theme weeks out of a top hat or something?) And while the headline remained the same — shockingly, Joshua Ledet killed it — the subtext of Wednesday night's show was where things really started to get interesting.
Hollie Cavanagh showed she's still got plenty of fight left. Jessica Sanchez continued her transformation from a genuine singing machine into an actual machine. Skylar Laine remained a dark-horse contender. And Phillip Phillips just did whatever the heck he wanted to. Yes, with just a few weeks left in the competition, the race for the season 11 crown is officially on.
And as always, we were watching, notepads in hand, ready to dole out some grades for the remaining "Idol" hopefuls. You can probably guess who's at the top of the class ... but who might be packing their bags and headed for boarding school? Read on to find out!
Joshua Ledet: When the judges are saying you're one of the best "Idol" contestants of all time (not to mention one of the best singers "of the past 50 years"), you must be doing something right. Once again, Ledet lapped the competition, getting big and brassy with the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and then completely, totally, absolutely slaying the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody" ... in the night-closing slot, nonetheless. That performance touched off a wave of complimentary one-upsmanship from the judges, culminating in J.Lo dropping that "past 50 years" line (for the record, she's 42). And you know what? That praise is deserved: Ledet's the best singer on the show — by a mile — and unlike some of his fellow hopefuls, he brings genuine emotion to each and every song. I can't wait until he's voted off in, like, two weeks, so America can get the Skylar/Phil Phillips matchup they so desperately desire. Grade: A
Hollie Cavanagh: Yesterday, I joked (for not so nice reasons) that "Idol" producers stacked the deck in her favor by choosing British/'60s songs ... unaware, of course, that HCav would actually deliver the goods. Sure, her version of Ike & Tina's "River Deep, Mountain High" was heavy on awards-show histrionics, but she did the song justice — or "wore it out," according to Randy — and while she may have lacked some fire, you cannot deny she sang it perfectly. Then she knocked it out of the park with Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love," coming through in the clutch with a performance that was restrained and refined on one verse, big and brave the next. It was probably her best moment on the show ... good enough to make Randy invoke he-who-shall-not-be-named (Simon Cowell) live on the air! Is it possible Hollie's staging a comeback? B+
Skylar Laine: I was fired up when Little Steven talked her into doing CCR's "Fortunate Son," which shows you how much I know: Skylar never really seemed to be comfortable with the song, starting rough and barely improving from there (though the ending was nice, I suppose). She rebounded slightly with Dusty Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," which showed that she doesn't have to be in attack mode all the time. I still think she's a dark horse to win this whole thing, but middling performances like these aren't doing her any favors. Then again, neither is Steven Tyler complimenting her "boot scoot." C+
Jessica Sanchez: Clearly rattled since her near-elimination a few weeks back, J.Sanch continued her slide on Wednesday night with a pair of performances that were big on notes but largely bereft of actual emotion (did she and Hollie switch bodies or something?!?). Her take on Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" was appropriately over-the-top but lacked real passion, which Randy actually picked up on — way to be awake, dawg! — while J.Lo chose to ignore it. Steven's take? "The only thing that gives experience a run for its money is a 16-year-old." Gross, dude. Her version of Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" was most notable for its goofy stage design — is she starting a coven or something? — and the one big note she hit. And that's why I think Sanchez is living on borrowed time: She can outsing pretty much anybody, but the connection just isn't there. Then again, that's usually what happens when you're 16 and your biggest concern is, like, the prom. C–
Phillip Phillips: Not the best of nights for Phil-Squared, who laid it up with the Box Tops' "The Letter," and then bricked it big-time on the Zombies' "Time of the Season." The former was notable mostly for being exactly the same thing he's been doing for, like, 13 weeks now (the judges, of course, praised him for his "uniqueness"), only with more horn players added for no good reason. The latter, which saw him attempt to explore "melody," was pitchy and pinched and really pretty pained ... then again, he totally got to work a sweet jam sesh in there for a second, bro. At this point, it's pretty clear PP only does what PP wants, so how far can sheer handsomeness carry him? Oh, probably all the way to the title. C–

Comedy ties with 'Hunger Games' for most nominations, with eight.

The story of "Bridesmaids" was that of a surprise success that really was anything but surprising.
Based on a hilarious script by star Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo (you know her as the flick's freaked-out airplane passenger), the comedy had a strong showing at South by Southwest and Judd Apatow's producer credit to slap on every poster. A modest hit seemed all but guaranteed, but what it became was a pop-culture phenomenon.
Can women be funny? It was the dumb question that every 24-hour media outlet wanted to ask when "Bridesmaids" premiered, but all anyone had to do for an answer was sit down and watch the movie. Yes, women are funny, and there are few clearer examples than "Bridesmaids."
The movie tells the story of Annie Walker (Wiig), a failed baker who suffers a complete and hilarious breakdown when her best friend Lillian, played by fellow "SNL" alum Maya Rudolph, asks her to be the maid of honor at her wedding.
Wiig stood out as the writer and the fearless leader of a cast that included Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, "The Office" actress Ellie Kemper and scene-stealer Melissa McCarthy. Together, they formed a band of sisters, ready to push the boundaries and do just about anything for a laugh.
So many scenes come to mind: the wedding dress boutique, Wiig's drugged-out and short-lived airplane ride, one of the least-sexy sex scenes you can imagine (co-starring Jon Hamm), Wilson Phillips. It all added up to sore sides and tears of laughter.
"Bridesmaids" might never have reached the top spot at the box office, but helped by strong reviews and even stronger word-of-mouth, it went on to gross $288 million worldwide and finish with the 14th-highest domestic total of the year.
As Apatow's biggest hit yet, the financials for the film secured its status as a bona fide hit, but it wasn't until January of this year that the big picture came into view: "Bridesmaids" scored two Oscar nominations, an impressive achievement for the typically drama-minded Academy. The awards show honored both the screenplay and McCarthy's breakout performance.
With the 2012 MTV Movie Awards ahead, "Bridesmaids" will face new challenges. Competing against the likes of "The Hunger Games," "Harry Potter" and "Twilight," "Bridesmaids" is a comedy in a field full of dramas, but that didn't stop it from racking up eight nods, tying with "Hunger Games" for the most nominations. "Bridesmaids" is up for the top prizes — Movie of the Year and Best Cast — and individual nominations for Wiig for Female Performance and McCarthy for Breakthrough. The two actresses will also compete against each other for Best Comedic Performance.
Originally heralded as a film that shows off the power of women in comedy, "Bridesmaids" refused to be pinned down and instead displayed the new possibilities of comedy as a whole.
Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.
