'Blair Witch' Star Heather Donahue Details Leaving Hollywood to Grow Pot

'Blair Witch' Star Heather Donahue Details Leaving Hollywood to Grow Pot

Anyone who saw the hit 1999 indie horror flick The Blair Witch Project will remember Heather Donahue as the terror-stricken star with the memorable knit cap. But if you haven't seen Donahue lately, that's because she's been busy with her new career: growing marijuana.

In her new memoir, GrowGirl: How My Life After 'The Blair Witch Project' Went to Pot, which will be released Jan. 5, Donahue reveals how she left her middling Hollywood career behind to focus on the craft of cannabis farming.

"I wanted to change my life, see what else was out there for me, what else I might become," she says in a Q&A on her personal website. "So I burned most of the stuff from my life in L.A. (resumes, headshots, lingerie, lint) in the desert."

The Taken actress first received a prescription for medical marijuana in 2007 to treat PMS, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. She then decided to cultivate the illegal herb herself for a year in "Nuggettown," a community in Northern California that is known for its marijuana trade.

"I had no idea what to do next, and growing pot was what presented itself," she says on her website. "I felt better about putting medical marijuana in the world than I did about about making another terrible movie."

But after a friend and fellow grower got arrested, Donahue became disillusioned with the pot farming and decided to write the book instead of continue growing. She is still supportive of the farmers growing cannabis and thinks marijuana should be made legal.

"Where I live pot is legal. Cannabis has been intertwined with human culture for thousands of years," she writes. "It's here to stay as medicine, as an industry, and as a component of the culture. The idea that such a hearty, useful plant could be legislated out of existence seems pretty foolish, especially in retrospect."
