In director Jennifer Westfeldt's new relationship comedy Friends With Kids, she and her best friend decide to have a baby, but in real life babies might be on the brain but not in the near future.
Westfeld, 42, admits that after writing, directing and starring in a movie centered on how kids change the dynamic between formerly childless friends, she kept wondering why she and boyfriend Jon Hamm never took the plunge into parenthood.
"I've thought about this a lot lately. I never thought I’d be this age and not have kids," Westfeldt tells The New York Times. "But my life has also gone in a million ways I never anticipated."
The independent filmmaker goes on to explain that she and the Mad Men star, 41, are happy being a twosome -- at least for now.
"I kept feeling like I'd wake up with absolute clarity, and I haven't. And we have a pretty great life together. The chance that we'll regret it doesn't seem like a compelling enough reason to do it. I may wake up tomorrow with that lighting bolt, and I'll have to scramble to make it happen."
Westfeldt and Hamm have been dating for nearly 15 years, and the actress wrote the Friends With Kids script after witnessing the way their many friends' lives shifted to focus on baby milestones and preschool plans.
"Best intentions aside," Westfeldt says, having kids "always changes your friendship, at least that first year or so, in a way that I think is painful for both of you."
