'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close' Trailer: Sandra Bullock & Tom Hanks Star

'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close' Trailer: Sandra Bullock & Tom Hanks Star

When Jonathan Safran Foer released Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close in 2005, he helped usher in a new wave of post-9/11 literature. Now the movie adaptation -- starring Hollywood A-listers Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, as well as newcomer Thomas Horn -- is hitting theaters just months after the 10-year anniversary of the infamous terrorist attacks. Will it spark a new round of post-Sept. 11 movies? That remains to be seen, but you can watch the brand-new trailer below! (We dare you not to tear up.)

The film, which opens in limited release on Christmas Day, follows 9-year-old Oskar Schell (Horn) -- a boy who, as he explains in the trailer, sees the world differently than everyone else. After his father (Hanks) dies in the collapse of the Twin Towers, Oskar sets off on a quest to find the mysterious lock-box his dad left him the key to... and perhaps find a way to cope with his loss as well.

Like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Marley & Me, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a certified Christmas tear-jerker. In addition to the sob-inducing plot (if there's anyone who finished reading the book with a dry eye, we have yet to meet them), the movie has a pedigree that's the stuff of Oscar dreams.

Director Stephen Daldry is best known for Billy Elliot and The Reader, and screenwriter Eric Roth was responsible for the screenplay for David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Add to that the all-star cast of Hanks, Bullock, Viola Davis, James Gandolfini and John Goodman, and you've got yourself a certified cinematic win -- and an undeniable Oscar contender.
