A who's who of musical acts took the stage Monday night at the VH1 Divas Celebrate Soul concert in New York City. But there was one soul diva who was sadly absent -- Amy Winehouse.
So in addition to memorable performances by legendary divas such as Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan and Mavis Staples, as well as younger divas Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Jill Scott, the producers and talent also took the time to remember Winehouse, the English songstress who died tragically this summer.
Rapper Nas, who collaborated with the late singer and is featured on her upcoming posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, introduced the tribute.
"It didn't matter where she was from or what the color of her skin was, because Amy Winehouse was my true soul sista," he said.
"Now I'm proud, we're finally together on a song called 'Like Smoke.' And I'm here to honor a woman who had enough soul to last a lifetime. I wish she was here tonight, but like smoke, Amy Winehouse is still in the air lingering around all of us, and she'll be here for a long time to come."
First, R&B act Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings sang Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" and were joined by the "queen of rockabilly," Wanda Jackson.
Then Florence + The Machine frontwoman Florence Welch took the stage for a soulful rendition of Amy's "Back to Black," which was appropriate given the somber occasion of remembering a singer who died too soon.
