Although Sacha Baron Cohen has remained mum on the recent controversy about his planned appearance at the Oscars, his alter-ego from The Dictator certainly hasn't.
The Admiral General of Wadiya called in to the Today show Friday morning to chat with hosts Carl Quintanilla and Ann Curry about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' decision to ban Cohen from the Oscars if he showed up to walk the red carpet in character as the brutal bearded dictator General Aladeen. Watch the video below!
"I have been very busy today,” Baron Cohen-as-Aladeen says. "I actually delayed 30 executions to do this (interview)."
Saying that he's "outraged" by the decision to ban him, Aladeen then launches into a merciless rant against the Academy.
"Normally I would be impressed by an act of cowardice by a faceless regime," he says. "But this is personal. I have issued them an ultimatum: They have until midday on Sunday to give me my tickets back. If they do not, they will see and face unforeseen and unimaginable consequences." (Those consequences he says will be raised oil prices -- so they're not so "unimaginable.")
And the Academy wasn't alone in feeling Aladeen's wratha. "By the way, how is your family?" Aladeen asks the Today hosts at one point. "How is your eunuch Al Roker?"
All joking aside, the Academy is treating this as no laughing matter. An Academy rep told the New York Post that the Oscars red carpet should not be an outlet for Cohen to pimp his movie. "We have expressed that we don't feel it's appropriate to use our Oscar red carpet as a venue for a movie promotional stunt," said the rep. And if Baron Cohen should agree not to dress as Aladeen -- but then does so anyway? "We'll have to cross that bridge when we get to that."
Fingers crossed this feud doesn't end with Cohen making good on his Today show threats!
