The show mustn't always go on. Thursday's surprising news that The Colbert Report would be put on hiatus for the remainder of the week due to "unforeseen circumstances," prompted one question: Why? Now we may have the answer. A source close to the show tells the New York Post that host Stephen Colbert, 47, asked that production be temporarily halted so that he can care for his ailing 91-year-old mother, Lorna Colbert.
At this time, Lorna's ailments are unknown -- and the Post's source says that's no mistake.
"They are a very private family," the insider explains. "It's not surprising that he did not want anyone to know what was going on."
The Wall Street Journal reports that she show could return as early as next week, with Comedy Central airing repeats until it comes back. The show, however, had just Monday returned from a week-long hiatus, so the network will have to dip into The Colbert Report back catalogue.
In 1974, when Colbert was 10, his father and two older brothers were killed in a plane crash. Perhaps as a result, Colbert -- who is one of 11 children -- has always had a very close bond with his mother.
