On Friday night, the world got its first glimpse of Beyonce and Jay-Z's baby, Blue Ivy Carter. Music's most powerful couple could have easily sold their baby photos to a glossy magazine for millions, or tried to hide her from prying eyes completely. Instead, they surprised us all by debuting their family album on a new Tumblr blog.
"B really really thought about this, and she really wanted to do it this way," celebrity stylist June Ambrose, a friend of the couple, told Us Weekly on Saturday.
"She just couldn't imagine selling pictures of her baby," Ambrose explained. "It just felt really good to see her do it under her terms. It doesn't surprise me."
Experts estimated that Blue Ivy's baby photos might have fetched around $2 million in a magazine bidding war. (The highest price paid for celebrity baby photos is reportedly $10 million, paid by People at the height of the market for pictures of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's twins.)
In the photographs (clearly taken by a professional), the newborn baby looks alert, healthy and absolutely gorgeous. With dark eyes and a full head of thick hair, she's obviously inherited her mom's beauty -- and, judging from that look she's giving the camera, her dad's charisma! There's a very sweet photo of Jay-Z grinning ear-to-ear as he holds his tiny girl, and another of the babe snuggling with Beyonce. (Beyonce, it should be noted, has perfect hair and makeup as she holds the baby she just delivered. Did they have a stylist in the birthing room with them?)
In a handwritten note posted at the top of their blog, Jay-Z and Beyonce invite fans to "share in our joy," and thank the media for "respecting our privacy during this beautiful time in our lives." Don't worry, Carter family -- if you keep posting baby photos, respecting your privacy will be a piece of cake!
